Gardening the Single Girl Way!

This Single Girl Sunday I set out to build a vegetable and herb garden (actually, it’s the rainy season in Virginia – so it was really a Saturday – gotta find my sunshine!).

Some of us have ample space to install an in-ground garden, but I’m not one of those people. My outdoor living space, while lovely, is mostly patio. So I opted for a container garden. There are a lot to choose from out there so be mindful when making your selection.

For my container garden, I had some very specific criteria. I wanted something that would allow me to grow a reasonable variety of veggies/herbs, but was compact and easy to manage. It must also have a self-watering feature. After doing my research I decided on the GreenStalk Garden. I chose the 5 tier – knowing that if it was too large I could make it modular and remove a layer or two. Instead, I opted for all 5 levels and put this on the available rolling base so that I could change the light exposure over the summer months.

I found that when putting this together – at least for me, it was easier for me to fill each level, and stack while the soil was dry. Soil is wickedly heavy when it’s wet – so while the instructions said to plant and then stack – I opted to execute this in a different order. Once stacked, watering the soil will help it to settle. This way before planting, if I needed to add more soil to any layer – it was easy to do.

The Greenstalk Garden is a modular system – and took less than an hour to fill with soil and assemble. I filled the bin at the top with water – and voila! – drip irrigation! Easy peasy!

The next step is planting and installing the supports – but of course it rained yet again – so that will need to wait until next weekend.

(One thing to note – this is not a sponsored post – I did my research and selected this planting system. Will report back over the summer to let you know how it worked out!)
